TUCSON, Ariz. - Needing a big score in their third road meet of the season to help their Regional Qualifying Score (RQS), the
Washington gymnastics squad came up big with a season-high 195.675 in a narrow loss at No. 21 Arizona Friday night, which edged the Huskies with a 195.750 at the McKale Center.
But the loss meant nothing as the Huskies just needed a big score to help them vault back into the top 25 rankings with an RQS. Teams need at least three home meets and three away meets to earn an RQS, which NCAA qualification is based on. UW had competed in just two away meets coming into this week and one was a season-low performance at Oregon State. More

The Dempsey Indoor track & field season wrapped up Saturday with the UW Final Qualifier, but not before another handful of athletes blazed a trail from Seattle to next week's NCAA Indoor Championships at Arkansas. One of those qualifiers was Husky sophomore Mel Lawrence, who assured herself a spot with a win in the 3,000-meter run.
Lawrence, who was 12th in the 3k at the NCAA Indoor meet last year, needed to improve her standing on the national performance list today to book a return trip to NCAAs. She made sure she was firmly inside any bubble by going well under the NCAA Automatic standard of 9:13.00, finishing first in a time of 9:08.74 that was just a split second off her own school record. Lawrence now ranks fifth in the NCAA at the distance.
In the same race, redshirt freshman Kendra Schaaf continued to improve coming off a foot injury, as she cut seven seconds off her 3k time from just one week ago, clocking 9:20.53, third-best in school history. Junior Kenna Patrick also had a strong finish, clocking 9:39.90 for ninth. More
HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The No. 1 Washington softball team swept a pair of games at the Bank of Hawaii Invitational in opposite fashion Saturday, blowing out Seattle U, 12-0, in just five innings before being pushed to extra innings by host
Hawaii but coming out on top, 1-0, to earn the top seed for Sunday's playoffs.
UW (15-1) used an 11-run inning in which they hit three home runs and capitalized on three Seattle errors to score seven unearned runs in the day's first game. But they almost blew their chances in the second game, leaving nine runners on base and not scoring a run through seven innings despite three hits, three walks and four Hawaii errors.
But the Huskies finally broke through in the eighth inning, this time taking advantage of the Rainbow Wahine's fifth error of the game to score with two outs. More
