Brad Walker Wins U.S. Pole Vault Title

EUGENE, Ore. - Former Husky great Brad Walker captured his third outdoor national pole vault title today on the third day of the U.S. Track & Field Championships at Oregon's Hayward Field. Walker, a Mountlake Terrace resident, bounced back well after a disappointing no height showing at the Beijing Olympics last summer.

The reigning World Champion, Walker only had to compete to be awarded an automatic bid to the 2009 World Championships coming up in August in Berlin. However, he did not settle for merely showing up, clearing 18-2 ½ on his first attempt and then passing up to 18-10 ¼ which he also cleared on his first try. Three additional vaulters cleared that bar but all had earlier misses so Walker won the tiebreaker. More

Husky Track Named One of NCAA's Top Ten Programs

The Washington track & field squads were bestowed with a new and distinguished honor today, as the inaugural Program of the Year standings were announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Husky women's program finished ninth in the 2008-09 rankings while the men finished 10th.

The men's Program of the Year Award is named in honor of former Arkansas coach John McDonnell, while the women's moniker is the Terry Crawford Award after current Cal Poly coach. This is the first year for both awards.

Each award is similar in principle to the NACDA Director's Cup, which measures the overall success of athletic departments. The USTFCCCA Program of the Year awards honor the cross country/track & field program that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution's finish at the NCAA Division I Championships.
